Sparta Police: Passenger in Traffic Stop Faces Drug Charges

A Lafayette man is facing drug charges when the car he was riding in was stopped of a broken brake light on Route 15. Sparta Police Officer Thomas Herd stopped 35-year-old Lafayette resident Katherine Vaughn on July 18, according to police.

When Herd checked the background of the driver and passenger Fabian Rodriguez, Herd found an outstanding $400 warrant for Rodriguez according to police.

Sparta Police Officer Scott Elig arrived on the scene to assist. Rodriguez was found to have hypodermic needles, 15 wax packets of heroin with the stamp FREE EL CHAPO and two small zip lock bags containing cocaine, police report.

Rodriguez was arrested and brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters for processing.

Vaughan was ticketed for maintenance of lamps.

Rodriguez was charged with possession of heroin and cocaine and hypodermic needles. Because of his criminal history Rodriguez was taken to Keogh Dwyer Correctional Facility in Newton pending a court date.

Sparta Sgt. Pensado also assisted with Rodriguez’s arrest and processing.
